When Kun Shan was originally established, a bungalow-style library was built in the northeast part of the campus. Due to changing pedagogical requirements, the library was moved to the fourth floor of Electrical Engineering Building and later to the fifth floor of Technological and Vocational Hall. With the arrival of the modern electronic era, the school spent more than one hundred fifty million New Taiwan Dollars to build a six-story multi-functional library, which was completed and opened to the public in 1993.
In 1996, Kun Shan was promoted to a college of technology and, soon after, to university of technology. Due to the rapid increase in the demand for information and knowledge from a larger and more sophisticated user base, this library was no longer sufficient for the needs of our growing campus. As a result, Professor Rong-Rong Min, The Head of Librarians, began planning for the construction of the new Library and Information Center. She submitted her proposal to the school board and successfully received financial support of one point one billion New Taiwan Dollars.
The construction of Kun Shan University Library and Information Center began in the winter of 2003 and was completed two years later. The new library is a magnificent thirteen-story structure with a height of 55 meters and total floor area of 356,544 square feet. The building is spectacular and commands excellent views of southern Taiwan. It is imposing with its user-friendly facilities, sophisticated spatial design, comfortable study atmosphere, and electronic library resources.
In addition to being a library and an information center, it has an elegant exhibition gallery available for the exhibition of student and faculty projects. Furthermore, the building contains a number of assembly halls and conference rooms, each equipped with state-of-the-art high-technology systems. The library design aims to combine knowledge, culture, art, and technology harmoniously.
It is hoped that students and faculty members will appreciate this library and make the best use of it in order to move forward with the pace of the world, and most importantly, make great contribution to both the society and the nation.
