KSU is a university mainly focused on applied technology. The primary purpose and mission for the library is to collect and organize data to help faculty teaching efficiently. In addition, we assist students learning and inspire reading interests for further academic developments. The research projects done by teachers are the roots of academic power sources, so the jobs for librarians to support research works are pretty significant. Our objects are to carry out information services including in support of learning, teaching, and researching continuously. Specially, building up digital archives is also one of our characters.
Facing high-speed growths of educational technology and web technique, we hope that the software equipment and hardware equipment in the new library and information center will give faculty, staff, and students all types of resources and assistances in the library information field. By various, virtual, and real serving methods, the library endeavors to satisfy users’ endless information needs for the users in the campus and in the community. To go a step further, the library will become a community information center and a leading resource station in the southern part of Taiwan.
With the completion of brand new library and information center, we set up six visions as directions for functional structures and librarian services. Our visions are listed as below:
1. Equipment:
1.1 broadband networking environment for cable spots and hot spots
1.2 multimedia computers with scanners, web cams, handwriting boards, head-sets, and microphones; can read cards with different spec.; can play CD,VCD, DVD, FM radio and cable TV
1.3 one audio-visual cube for 60 people and two multimedia rooms for 10 people both equipped with over-head project, rear projection monitor, and multi-channel stereo
1.4 duplicate equipment, virtual lab, and multimedia lab with special functions such as converter, film editing, stunt, dub, software, and hardware
1.5 video on demand system and language learning audio-visual box seats with speaking, listening, reading, writing abilities
1.6 LCD TV, PDP TV, TFT-LC TV, and other audio-visual equipment for one person or many people to use
2. Environments:
2.1 to decorate with flowers and pictures, cozy and bright lighting with soft and pleasant music to make users feel as comfortable as home
2.2 24-hour quiet study area with networking environment
2.3 delightful coffee shop and bookstore
2.4 public space for various types of exhibitions to promote reading atmosphere
2.5 audio-visual center with the newest and hottest programs
3. Services:
3.1 available subject specialists for advanced research consultations
3.2 remote access to library online resources in terms of electronic journals and databases
3.3 to invite native speakers, religion or psychology professionals to interact with library patrons in activities like communication corner, English consulting, and psychology seminar
3.4 to provide access to relevant resources to family members of faculty and staff, alumni, and community
3.5 to edit e-newspaper and make it possible to be subscribed online; to utilize media such as e-mail or cell phone message to notify users news and update data regularly
4. Collections:
4.1 to establish collection development policy: Our design related departments perform excellent this couple year, and design collections in other libraries are limited. The library adjusts collection policy to enrich items of the design category as a distinguishing feature.
4.2 to increase the scope of digital archives: Digital archives of cultural relics, historical files, music, and art works play an important role in future library except traditional printed matters and electronic resources. Starting with cultural relics possessed by the school, we can put them in order and treasure them up. Through cooperation with local painters, musicians, etc., we also hope to digitalize their creations and life experiences.
4.3 to realize digital library idea: Our library not only keeps collecting traditional materials but also increasing e-books, e-journals, and databases. Faculty and students can login Internet at home through the remote assess system and search the digital library.
4.4 to strengthen multimedia collections: People emphasize graphic thinking now. For us, it would be a significant goal to raise this kind of items for education and recreation considerations under the diversity trend.
5. Cooperation within the library and with other organizations
5.1 Within the library, we plan to work with departments in their special fields. Enhancing library functions in different levels of acquisition, purchase, information resource training, and use is a practical way in support of teaching and research.
5.2 With other organizations, we precede shared cataloging, cooperative acquisition for electronic collections, interlibrary loan, and will take one step ahead of cooperative digital reference consulting. By doing this, redundancy and waste of resource investments can be reduced a lot and increase better service qualities.
6. Reorganization:
Rapid changes of digital revolution, globalization, knowledge orientation, chaotic and competitive environment appear one after another. And more, information technology and Internet develop so fast. In order to sustain these new environments, an organization must depend on newer and powerful techniques to transform its information system to complete the goal of eLibrary. Hopefully, the procedures of reprocesses, resource planning, internal integration, and external connection will bring us the scenario of reorganization in the future, and then further upgrade the service qualities.
Modern library is not only a place keeping materials, but also a learning center with books, periodicals, media, and information. It could be a relaxing quiet study area, a leisure center, or even a virtual digital resource center. Users are able to get information what they need and have connections with the library to enjoy various assistances anywhere at anytime. We will definitely do our best to work on providing optimum access to patrons in support of equality of opportunity for people to pursue their self-defined goals. With users’ enthusiasm to utilize library, we have the best motive power to insist on the devotions to the career of library information services.
